JTL-Shop 5 Google Analytics

Register on Google Analytics and connect your JTL-Shop 5

How to register on Google Analytics and how to connect your JTL-Shop 5 to Google Analytics to monitor activities on your website.

That’s the topic of our JTL-Software article, as well as the video below.

How Google Analytics helps your JTL-Shop 5

Today we want to show you a solution on how you as a retailer can be more analytical and manage your online shop efficiently in order to be more successful with your sales. Those are great goals that cannot be reached from one day to the other. But every beginning is difficult. That’s why we’re showing you today the connection of google analytics to your online shop using a JTL-Shop 5 as an example.

Register on Google Analytics

First off, you need a google analytics account. And the primary requirement for it is to have a google account. You have to create a new account if you dont have one already, but that’s something we won’t cover in this video. Now if you want to create a google analytics account, you can either search for “google analytics” or reach the website directly by typing “analytics.google.com” . Then you can click on Start measuring. Give your account a name of your choice, leave the following options activated, and click on next.

In this step you have to establish the property and set your time zone and currency. In the next step check all options that are applicable to your business and then click on create. You have to accept the terms of service, so give your checkmark and proceed to the next step.

Create New Data Stream

Now you have to create a new data stream, which is nothing but a data source of your property. Since we want to connect our online shop, we click on “web”. Here we can paste the URL of our JTL-Shop 5 and give the stream a fitting name. Leave the enhanced measurement activated and click to create the stream.

Now you see on the top right your individual Measurement ID which you must remember. If you’re managing a JTL-Shop 4 and came across this video, we’ll provide in the description an article that can guide you through the next steps for the connection to JTL-Shop 4.

Go to your JTL-Shop 5

For JTL-Shop 5 owners the next step is to go to the JTL Store or to the Netzdinge website.
Here we have to download the Google Codes plugin for JTL-Shop 5. If you’re interested to
learn about everything this plugin does, you can watch our interview with Rene Kaltschmid.

In the “plugin download” tab you can get yourself the latest version. Once the download is
complete go to your Shop Backend without unzipping your file. Now go to your Plugin manager, to the upload tab. Upload the zip file you just downloaded. You’ll get notified that the plugin has bee successfully uploaded, so you can find and install it in the Available Tab. The plugin will also appear in the Problems tabs because it requires a license key. Enter “demo” as a license key and save your changes. Now the google codes plugin has been added to the activated plugins and you can proceed to customize it on the settings.

Finalize the plugin

What this plugin can do in itself is a topic for another video. We want to show you the final setup for google analytics and how to connect the google search console. For this purpose you must find the HTML Tag and copy-paste it here. You can find it in your settings, under Confirmation & Ownership. In the alternative confirmation methods you can copy your HTML Tag. Once you’ve pasted it here, delete everything before “content”. In the information window you can see why you have to do that. Below this field, you have the options for inserting your Google Sitelink Box script, Cookies Guidelines and Debugging.

Google Analytics Preferences

What’s important for us is the settings on google analytics. Firs off you have to checkmark this option to activate google analytics. In the previous steps we saved the measurement ID and now paste it here. Since we want to maintain our legal compliance, we leave this option set to “yes for everything”. However, this is not to say that we are giving any legal advice at this point. In the next step you can decide where to place the link, so enter the CSS Path. You can decide the positioning by selecting if you’d like the Link to be positioned before, after or someplace else.

Here you can decide if you want the Status of the Opt-in Cookies to be shown and if you want a report to show up during activation or deactivation. We suggest to leave this field as it is in order to maintain the protection of privacy. Cookies can be prevented with this option, however read the document first, to avoid making a Data Protection mistake.

This option transfers eCommerce data to google analytics. In the end you can also decide what data should be transferred and the length of stay of a visitor. In the next field you can set the intervals for the measurement of the Length of stay. If you want to transfer the scroll and reading speed you have to checkmark this field as well. Finally, save your changes. Now you can test by clicking for some time on different pages of your shop and then go to your google analytics. As you can see, the website visit has been registered.
